On our little homestead, nothing goes to waste, not even eggshells. I’ve been saving up shells from my quail eggs, but this method works just the same with chicken, duck, or store bought eggs.
Once dried and crushed down, the shells make a coarse powder that I keep in a jar for future use. It’s simple, quick, and turns something you’d normally throw away into a valuable resource.

How to Make Crushed Eggshells for Quail & Chickens
What you need:
- Clean eggshells (quail, chicken, duck, or store-bought)
- Baking sheet
- Rolling pin / food processor / blender
- Jar or container for storage
Steps:
- Rinse shells well to remove any egg residue.
- Spread on a baking sheet.
- Bake at 350°F (95°C) for 10-15 minutes until dry and brittle. Cool completely.
- Crush into small pieces using a rolling pin, food processor, or blender.
- Store in a sealed jar or container.

How to use:
- Mix into quail or chicken feed for added calcium.
- Offer in a dish on the side so birds can take what they need.
- Extra shells can be sprinkled in the garden or compost for soil health.
